Maintenance

security alarm maintenance

To maintain the effectiveness and overall performance of your home alarm system, it is vital that your home security maintenance program is current. A home security system triggers an alarm condition when your home is breached or burglarized. There are several common components to most home alarm systems that include motion detectors, door sensors, window sensors, glass break detectors, alarm panel, indoor siren, power transformer and backup battery suppplies.  Make sure that you maintain your home security system to ensure full operational status when you need it.

How do I test my home security system?

Home security alarm systems should be periodically tested on a monthly basis. Just “Arm” the system and walk in front of each motion detector to see if it triggers the alarm system. Open and close each door to make sure it triggers a zone on the keypad. Set off the security alarm system and wait for the alarm monitoring center to contact you. If they do not call within a few seconds, research the reason and correct it.

Why is it important to test home security systems?

Testing your alarm system reduces the risk of false alarms or lack of response.  The only real way to determine if your security alarm system is working is testing it.

How often should I test a home security system?

You should test your home alarm system on a monthly basis. If you have alarm monitoring services, be sure to coordinate any tests with them.  If you do not, then you may find the police showing up at your door.

What should I check on my security system?

Be sure to always check the status of your backup alarm battery.  Disconnect the alarm control panel and see if the keypad is still lit.  If it is, power is being fed throughout the alarm system.  If it does not, be sure to replace the alarm batteries.  Replacing the alarm system battery ensures proper protection operations.  You should replace the security alarm system batteries every five years regardless.
